The Gospel in a picture


RED - Our sin separates us from God, and we all sin - every single one of us.  So, God sent His Son Jesus Christ to shed His blood on the cross to cover our sins. To make a way for us to have a personal relationship with Him.

"When they hurled their insults at Him, He (Jesus) did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him (God) who judges justly. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed."  1 Peter 2:23-24

WHITE - Because of Jesus' sacrifice, we have an opportunity for a new life.  Our sins are forgiven.  We are washed clean - purified by His blood.  We are made whole.  All we have to do is ask Jesus to come into our life and He will!

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."  Romans 10:9

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18

 "...wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." Psalm 51:7

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"  2 Corinthians 5:17

PURPLE - When we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we are adopted into God's family.  We become royalty.  We become sons and daughters of the King.

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"  1 John 3:1 

"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children.  Now we call Him, “Abba, Father."  For His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share His glory, we must also share His suffering."  Romans 8:14-17

Friends

When I think of being the hands and feet of Jesus, I think of my friends.  And going through breast cancer just confirmed it.  They took such good care of me and my family!
Here is my friend Sheri aka "Meals on Wheels"!  She brought us a delicious dinner last week and dashed out the door to deliver a few more to other people God had put on her heart.  She is also the one who felt led to have people bring us meals through the end of March while the effects of radiation lingered after my treatments were completed.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR OBEDIENCE SHERI!  THANK YOU FOR THE FABULOUS DINNER (my family & I gobbled it down in record time!)  THANK YOU FOR BEING MY FRIEND!

Oh yeah, on her dash out the door, Sheri scoped out the blank wall above my love seat. 
On Friday night she tells me she has a plan for my wall!!!  How exciting! I've been looking at that blank wall for a year and 9 months now - without a plan.  But, Sheri has a plan!!!  God did not put us here to do life alone!  We need each other.  In more ways than one!

Here is Marijo with her radiant smile.  She brought dinner on Tuesday - pizza that I had been craving.  THANK YOU MARIJO!!!  She and I met at the fall women's retreat our church had last September.  We are also in MOPS together, and God has given us some other opportunities to get to know each other better as well.  God is doing some big things in her life right now through some very difficult circumstances.  KEEP TRUSTING IN THE LORD MARIJO!  He WILL see you through.  He loves you more than you can imagine!

I have mentioned before that I wanted Scripture on my walls, and that my husband bought me a Cricut machine when it was 60% off for my birthday.  Well, I finally figured out how to use the thing!  I made all of the letters but knew I could not put them on the wall by myself.  So, God sent my friend Cindy over to help me!  She has a very keen eye for detail and spacing (she bakes & decorates cakes, cookies, cupcakes & other yummy desserts. Check out her blog here.)   And in no time, look at this.....

FABULOUS!!!  THANK YOU CINDY!!!  She made it look so easy too. 

Then, this past weekend a few of us were able to go to the Priscilla Shirer simulcast at my mom's church.  (FYI - Beth Moore's simulcast on Sept. 10 will also be held at the same church for FREE!!!  Click on WOW upcoming events to register on the church's website.)
God spoke loud and clear through Priscilla too.  There is one thing she said that keeps replaying over and over in my mind..... "God does not speak to be heard. He speaks to be obeyed!" 

Preach it, Sista!  That is what I'm talking about! 

God wants us to OBEY.  ACT.  DO SOMETHING. 

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do."   James 1:22-25

Did you see that??!!!  Obedience leads to blessing!

"Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."  James 2:15-17 

Enough said.

Stop wasting time.  Go.  Be obedient.

You Must Have the Wrong Number...

A few weeks ago, I received a recorded message from one of the high school assistant principals inviting parents of rising 9th graders to a meeting at the high school. 


My first thought, "Uhhh, why are you calling me?  You must have the wrong number."

Then I received an e-mail and a flyer about the same meeting.  What's up with that?

Surely this sweet little boy of mine canNOT be going to high school next year!!!
I mean it was just yesterday that he was born 2 months early and had to spend 5 weeks in the hospital before coming home on a breathing/heart monitor.

There is NO WAY I am  he is old enough for him  to be in high school!!!

To make matters worse, the very next day (after receiving the phone call from the high school assistant principal the night before) I'm in the carpool line at Tanner's school and look what I see...

Drivers??!!!  As in driver's license??!!!  My son - almost old enough to drive - the nerve of these people!  What are they trying to do, give a poor mama a heart attack??!!!  What are they thinking??!!!

Why, it was just yesterday that he was standing in the front seat of the car turning the steering wheel while he pretended to be driving.  He used his "studying voice" for sound effects too.  And he didn't even need a job to afford the gas or insurance either. 

Huh.  They act like Tanner will be able to drive a "real" car in 10 months or something.  What is the deal here??!!!

The next thing you know, I'll be getting a phone call telling me Tanner has an appointment to get braces when it was just yesterday that he cut his first tooth!

WARNING TO ALL PARENTS:  Be intentional.  Invest in your children's lives today because tomorrow they will be grown.

You know you are having a good day when...

Battling fatigue from radiation is tougher than I thought it would be.  I've been so mentally drained lately that it has literally brought me to tears!  Being a task-oriented person does not help much either!

But, God's presence and strength are sustaining me.  He is taking care of everything, and He has plans to use it all for His glory!  

So, I thought it would be good to do a little reflecting on some of the things God has done to help me keep things in perspective.  And this verse keeps playing over and over in my mind...    "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Philippians 4:8


You know you are having a good day when...

* You get to witness God answering prayers - MY BROTHER SHANE CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL YESTERDAY - VALENTINE'S DAY!!!  Talk about LOVE!  YAY GOD!!! 


* You dash out of the house without grabbing anything for lunch only to get to work and be told by your cousin Allyson, "We are having lunch at the office today for Valentine's at noon.  I just ordered Chick-fil-a nuggets and chicken salad sandwiches from your husband."  Talk about GOD'S PROVISION!!!


* You muster up enough courage to check your mailbox (after a few days) and are delighted to find NO MEDICAL BILLS!
Instead, you find a precious card from a praying friend who has been asking God to give you exactly what you need - STRENGTH!!!  And she added an extra treat inside.  Talk about A BLESSING!

THANK YOU KRISTIN!!!

And why would someone be afraid to check their mail, you ask.  Well, maybe because the last time she did, she received 6 MEDICAL BILLS in one day!!!  Talk about OVERWHELMING!
Just a little free advice - anytime you receive a medical bill, you should call the billing department to make sure everything is correct.  We have found that some claims were not filed with the insurance company by mistake, were not coded correctly (which ended up cutting our bill in half!), could be negotiated, etc.  Make the call.  It is worth it!


* You are soooo tired you can't see straight and someone shows up at your door with dinner for you and your family.  Talk about BEING THE HANDS AND FEET OF JESUS!
THANK YOU BARBARA!  YOUR CASSEROLE WAS DELICIOUS!


* You conspire to surprise and kidnap your friend on her birthday and it works!  Talk about BEING A GOOD SPORT!  Cindy had gotten all comfy thinking she was in for the night! NOT!!


* Your friend leaves you homemade chicken noodle soup in her mailbox so you can pick it up during your early morning walk through her neighborhood.  Talk about being a TRUE FRIEND!

And these are only a few things that God has done!  When we keep our focus on Him, He helps us keep our perspective - even in the midst of our difficult circumstances. 

LOVE HIM!
CLING TO HIM!
TRUST HIM! 
RELY ON HIM! 
OBEY HIM!

HE IS WORTH IT!

Blessings

UPDATE ON SALLY (as of Friday)

Sally's PET scan was clear. Praise the Lord! No other cancer. Her surgery went well today. She had a rod put into her femur and the tumor was removed. She will have radiation on that bone starting in a few weeks. She is resting now with her family at her side and will be home in a few days.

Thank You, Lord, for answering our prayers and taking such good care of our sweet sister in Christ.  Please continue to comfort her and heal her completely.  We give you all the praise and glory!  Amen.

On Thursday afternoon, the doorbell rang.  I opened the door to find my neighbor and 2 of her children smiling back at me.  My neighbor is the one whose 4th grader is battling brain cancer.  I introduced her on my Jan. 8 post.

She said her son only has a week and a half left of radiation so he is very tired.  He is also taking oral chemotherapy at night.  What a brave young man!  She said he doesn't have much of an appetite, but he will eat this.....
Lemon yogurt pound cake!  YUMMY!!!

So she wanted to bring me some and see how I was doing with my radiation.  What a special blessing!  It made me cry!

Then, my friend Angela from MOPS brought us a box full of blessings for dinner and breakfast.

Did we really eat an entire loaf of fresh, warm bread at dinner, along with our chicken noodle soup and cupcake dessert (Grandma's recipe no doubt)??!!!

And check out these heart shaped muffins....talk about love!  I've been instructed by my children to get the recipe.

Angela brought some pretty flowers too.  And here's my husband volunteering to taste test the cupcakes.  Life is short.  Eat dessert first!

Faith did not even let the box go to waste...she designed a hat out of it.  How creative!
I've been told it is still a work in progress, and by the looks of the floor in the computer room, I would believe it!  I'll take another picture when it's finished.

On Friday afternoon as soon as we got home, I had a surprise visit from my friend Cindy.  We haven't seen each other all week because she has been nursing her family back to health.  All 3 of her children and her husband have been sick.

A quick raditation update...I have completed my 9th treatment - only 24 more to go!  Just starting to turn red and burn a little.  I'm usually ready for bed before 8pm!!! 

God is giving me lots of opportunities to talk with other women while I am at radiation.  How exciting!  So please keep praying for these developing relationships.  

I had to take Faith with me to treatment yesterday.  The incredible radiation staff let her see the Big Machine too.  I'm hoping this helps her understand everything a little better.  She has been mentioning death a lot lately.  And the other day on the way to school, she asked me if my cancer meant she was going to have cancer too.  

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds
in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7

Let the Radiation Begin!

Today has been a full day! 

My daughter had to be at school at 7:15 a.m., so I went to work early after dropping her off.  And for the record, I am NOT a morning person.  I worked all day until it was time for radiation.  I was tired before I ever got to the doctor's office!  Thinking all day is hard work!

When I got to radiation, I was told that their computer server had been down for several hours, and they had been unable to provide treatments.  However, their server problem had been fixed right before I got there, and treatments had resumed!  What a blessing!

Today's treatment was VERY fast.  I no sooner got on the table, and it was time to get off. 

The radiation machine is massive and moves around me.  (I tried to find a picture of it on- line, but couldn't locate one.)  It makes a little noise, but I could still hear "Journey" playing in the background.  I felt led to pray, and here is the verse that came to mind...

"Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body."  1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Interesting, huh?

So, I prayed for God's temple that was stretched out on a hard table in a dark room receiving beams of radiation to burn away cells - both healthy & unhealthy. 

Now, I am going to honor Him by getting some sleep!  I will share more tomorrow.

I NEEDED TO BE REMINDED...

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can
take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and
against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God..." Ephesians 6:10-13

A little spiritual battle broke out on Monday night.  It did not surprise me.  It just frustrated me.  I did not handle it so well either.  In my mind, I knew it was one of the devil's schemes.  But, my mouth chose to ignore that memo and take sides with my emotions.  Not pretty.

God is so gracious and forgiving though.  He loves me in spite of myself.  He loves you too.  NO MATTER WHAT!  We cannot out sin God's forgiveness and love.

In an effort to contain my frustration, I decided to occupy my mind by reading.  I'm in the process of reading the book "Radical" by David Platt, and it was close by so I started with it.  I was only able to focus for a few paragraphs before my thoughts drifted back to the spiritual battle field.  Not to mention that I was also getting tired. 

So, I prayed out loud.  First I asked for forgiveness, and then I asked God to show me how to specifically respond to my situation.  I told Him how tired I was and that I really did not want to deal with the situation anymore at the moment.  So, I asked Him to please let me get some sleep and to show me what to do about my situation IN A DREAM.  *I have never asked Him to do that before.  I'm not even sure where it came from then.  I just heard myself saying those words!* 

I felt compelled to read just a little more until I was ready to actually fall asleep.  And do you know what David Platt began talking about 2 paragraphs later???.....

THE AMERICAN DREAM!!!

"As the American dream goes, we can do anything we set our minds to accomplish.  There is no limit to what we can accomplish when we combine ingenuity, imagination, and innovation with skill and hard work... The American dream prizes what people can accomplish when they believe in themselves and trust in themselves, and we are drawn toward such thinking.

But the Gospel has different priorities.  The Gospel beckons us to die to ourselves and to believe in God and to trust in His power.  In the Gospel, God confronts us with our utter inability to accomplish anything of value apart from Him.

As long as we achieve our desires in our own power, we will always attribute it to our own glory.  While the goal of the American dream is to make much of us, the goal of the Gospel in to make much of God.

In direct contradiction to the American dream, God actually delights in exalting our inability.  He intentionally puts His people in situations where they come face to face with their need for Him.  In the process, He powerfully demonstrates His ability to provide everything His people need in ways they could never have mustered up or imagined.  And in the end, He makes much of His own name." (Radical chapter 3)

Uhhh, I would definitely say that God spoke to me through a "dream" - The American Dream!!!  I was blown away - again!  Basically, God told me to rely soley on Him and His power so He could get the glory. I just need to keep my mouth closed and LET HIM DO THE FIGHTING FOR ME!  "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."  Exodus 14:14

David Platt, actually starts chapter 3 of Radical with a true story about a new pastor in a foreign country who encountered a serious threat from a witch doctor and how God clearly took care of that situation.  Talk about spiritual warfare!!!

He also talks about Joshua and the Battle of Jericho.  Jericho was the first city the Israelites would need to conquer in the Promised Land.  Remember, God told them to march around the city for seven days.  Then on the 7th time around on the 7th day, the priest played their trumpets and the walls fell down.

About the Battle of Jericho, Platt says, "Don't miss what God is doing.  He was divinely orchestrating the events of His people so that in the end only He could get the glory for what would happen.  But notice carefully what you don't see.  You don't see all the Israelites going up to the trumpet players and telling them what an incredible job they did that day.  No.  Instead you see the people of Israel realizing that only God could have done this.

This is how God works.  He puts His people in positions where they are desperate for His power, and then shows His provision in ways that display His greatness." (Radical chapter 3)

Okay.  Not only did God speak to me through a "dream" while I was wide awake, He also threw the Promised Land in there too.  You see, Sunday was my husband's 40th birthday.  He and I had a conversation about being tired of wandering around (like the Israelites did in the wilderness) for 40 years.  It is time to cross over into the Promised Land! 

I feel like our current spiritual battle is the first thing that needs to be conquered in the Promised Land (just like Jericho.)  God has made it very clear that the battle is His and victory will only come through Him.
 
Isn't our God absolutely amazing??!!!

Radiation Consult

"We wait in hope for the LORD;
   He is our help and our shield.
In Him our hearts rejoice,
   for we trust in His holy name.

I had my radiation consult appointment this morning in Pineville - a little closer to home.  I was greeted by trees on the walls in the lobby and in my exam room!  I have pictures but can't get them to upload right now - ugghhhh!

The staff I met this morning was super sweet.  I was treated like royalty!  God has handpicked these special ladies to work in this particular environment.  They really blessed me today.  I am looking forward to seeing them everyday for 6 weeks!

I will go back to be "fitted" for radiation on January 6.  After that, I will go for treatments 5 days a week for 6 1/2 weeks.  There will be a total of 33 treatments.  Fatigue and "sunburn" are the most common side effects.  I should be in there and out in less than 20 minutes per treatment!      

I am praying now for the ladies I will meet during radiation.  I'm asking God for lots of opportunities to share my faith with them.  When I walked up to the building this morning, I knew this was where God wanted me to be and He has specific plans for me.  God's presence brought tears to my eyes!  Please pray for me to be obedient and bold!

Let me just say, y'all have set the bar for dinner WAAAAAY TOOOO HIIIIIGH!!!  Now, my family is going to expect ME to cook them gourmet meals every night!  I've got to wean them and fast!  LOL!  WE HAVE BEEN SPOILED!  THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!  THANK YOU!!!  THANK YOU!!!  THANK YOU!!!
Christine and her helpers brought a FABULOUS dinner last night along with a DELICIOUS dessert from Jacona.  THANK YOU ALL!

Then, I got a surprise phone call from my friend Lily who wanted to bring by a favorite dish of hers - dinner for tonight!!!  THANK YOU!

Post-op Results

My post-op appointment with my surgeon Dr. White was yesterday.  My new friend Nancy B. came to pick me up and spent her afternoon driving me around!



"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -"  Ephesians 2:8 was the Scripture at the sign-in desk at the cancer center.  Extra special, very caring people work there.  What a blessing they are!

Dr. White had nothing but good news.  He went over in a little more detail the same pathology results his nurse shared with me last Friday.  The cancer was only 3mm (which is tiny!) and was not invasive (hasn't spread!)  He said he had to take out 3.8 cm of tissue though to remove both clips (from my 2 biopsies) and the scar tissue from my 1st biopsy.  Oh yeah, and the cancer.  No wonder I'm sore!!! 


Check out the pink breast cancer Christmas tree in Dr. White's office!  Barbie is the tree topper, and she has been through surgery (she's all bandaged up) & chemo (she's lost her hair).  It's a sweet tree.

And look at these smiling faces!  They work at the parking garage.  This was the first time I've seen the young lady.  The young man is always singing and serenades me every time I come through. 

I will see Dr. White again in 3 months for follow-up and to get started on tamoxifen (the oral medication that reduces reoccurrence.) 

My radiation consult has been scheduled for bright and early tomorrow morning.  These people do not mess around!  I know my incision has to heal before I can start radiation treatments.  So, I am assuming it will be a few weeks before I actually start.  I'll let you know after tomorrow.

Between yesterday and today, I am wiped out!  I am so tired!  I guess I need to e-a-s-e back into things.  This time of year makes it a little difficult to do that though.

Tracy came over with a basket FULL of goodies on Sunday!  THANK YOU!
These moist and delicious cupcakes were from Belinda.  She is new to our church and I have not met her yet.  But, still she is ministering to us!!!  THANK YOU!

Cindy and Sheri - 2 AMAZING FRIENDS!  They stopped by to check on me this morning.  THANK YOU!

A FEAST from Stephanie Barfield arrived for dinner tonight!  Even though Stephanie had been up all night delivering puppies and all day bottle feeding them while taking care of children, she still fed us!  THANK YOU!  We are praying for you Stephanie!  Get some rest SOON!

CAN I GET A VOLUNTEER......

to do a JOY cartwheel for me??!!!

Dr. White's nurse called late this afternoon with more good news.  She said that my pathology report was back, and Dr. White had gotten all of the cancer.  The tumor was 3mm in size, and its margins were clear.  No more surgery needed!  WOO HOO! 

My post-op appointment is on Tuesday, and we will discuss radiation treatments then.

For over 6 years now, God has reminded me of His presence and His promises through rainbows.  Well, Thursday morning when my daughter Faith was being picked up for school, she saw a rainbow over our house!  Then, this afternoon when Shawn & Tanner were coming home, Tanner spotted a rainbow over our house again! WOW!  ONLY GOD!!!  He makes Himself so real to us!  He loves us so much!

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS, ENCOURAGING WORDS, FOOD, WILLINGNESS TO HELP, ETC!  It may take me awhile to respond to your individual e-mails and send out thank you cards because typing on the computer and writing are quite uncomfortable right now.  But please know, my family and I are SO THANKFUL FOR YOU!

Sheri's delicious lasagna....

and ice cream sundaes for dessert!

Rene asked Faith the other day what she wanted for dessert and Faith told her - ice cream sundaes with sprinkles, whipped cream & cherries!  And when Rene came bearing ice cream & all the fixings, Faith was THRILLED!  Rene has a new friend for life!
